Elizabeth Martin was born with a rare genetic disability impacting her language, fine motor and gross motor skills. She had years of speech, occupational and physical therapy to assist in the development of her skills. She began her art career with visionary teachers who supported her full participation in the general education environment. These dynamic teachers saw in her a talent, ability and desire. Elizabeth participated in several art programs taught by artist mentors of various disabilities.
Elizabeth is currently enrolled in the Ceramics Program at Oakland Community College and has also started her own business, Elegant Designs by Elizabeth. She was a recipient of the Legacy Trust Award and has participated in Art Prize.
Elizabeth’s art brings a sense of pride and accomplishment to herself. She create personally designed and digitized machine embroidered pillows, towels, aprons, and baby items. She also makes functional food and dishwasher-safe ceramic items with special textures and using various glazing techniques.
