From pottery and painting to music and theater, kids interested in the arts will find plenty to enjoy at the fifth annual Art-A-Licious festival in downtown Adrian. The 2011 festival takes place on Friday and Saturday, Sept. 16-17, with events getting under way at 4 p.m. Friday.
Family and child-friendly activities include:
- My Adventure Theater, an interactive theater experience for the whole family. Characters are chosen from the audience, costumed on the spot and narrated through action-filled, laugh-packed adventures.
- A youth art tent at which kids can learn from art teachers in a variety of media and take their work home with them. The youth art tent will be open from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday and 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday.
- A pottery throwing tent where kids and adults can experiment with clay creations and try their hand at using a potter’s wheel. As with the youth art tent, instruction and materials are free.
- An Adrian Symphony Orchestra station where children can try out musical instruments.
- A readers’ theater by members of the Boys and Girls Club of Lenawee, followed by a dance performance by Adrian High School student Ja’Vaughn White, at 4 p.m. Friday.
- Family-friendly karaoke with a variety of age-appropriate tunes, starting at 6 p.m. Friday.
- Face painting all day on both days of the festival.
- A family movie, “Toy Story 3,” on an outdoor screen starting at 8:30 p.m. Saturday.
“What a great opportunity for families to participate in arts activities,” said Julianne Dolan, fine arts director for Adrian Public Schools and a member of the Art-A-Licious planning committee. “The number of creative experiences available this weekend will astound you. Come down to the festival and take the time to engage with your children in some free, fun activities. Watch them as they try out an instrument or a character, play a drum or dance to the music, create a work of art or view a beautiful professional piece. We promise you the little ones will beg to stay all day.”
One of the two performance stages at Art-A-Licious is sponsored by the Elizabeth Ruthruff Wilson Foundation, an organization dedicated to furthering arts education in Lenawee County. The Elizabeth Ruthruff Foundation Stage will host numerous youth performances throughout the festival.
Nearly 70 artists will be selling their work at Art-A-Licious. The festival also features street performers, two stages of entertainment, a variety of art demonstrations, and shopping at downtown Adrian stores.
Adrian is in Lenawee County, about an hour south of Ann Arbor and about 45 minutes north of Toledo. For directions and more information, visit artalicious.org or find the festival online at facebook.com/artalicious.
